HAITI UPDATE: Wednesday 20th
Update on the story of Alexis, the lady who had a blood transfusion from one of our doctors yesterday.
This morning her blood pressure started to drop and as a result her kidneys failed and then her lungs collapsed. The doctors were breathing manually for her for an hour, but after that there was nothing they could do. We praise God that she was a Christian and her brother, who was with her is also a believer. After she died her brother said, "She is much better now and with Jesus." Then he turned to the doctors and thanked them for doing all that they could to help her. The team are all grieving along with the family, but rejoice that she is no longer in pain and is in heaven with the Lord. Thank you for joining us in praying for her, and please continue to pray for this family.
I must make one correction from Alexis' story. It was actually Dr Eckehart Wolfe who gave his own blood to help Alexis, rather than Dr Leonardo. Dr Eckehart is a HCJB Global surgeon from the Shell hospital in Ecuador.
We hear that there are now only 5 functioning operating theatres in Port Au Prince, and 2 of these are at the Baptist Haiti Mission Hospital where our team are stationed. There continues to be a shortage of supplies and some operations are having to be delayed until materials arrive. Martin Harrison says, "One moment we are putting bodies in a mass grave, the next babies are being delivered." Tetanus is also a growing risk as very few people in Haiti have been vaccinated.
